Panhell honors profs for women's issues

The Panhellenic Council recognized Education Department Chair Andrew Garrod and Classics Professor Roberta Stewart for their promotion of women's issues yesterday evening in the Hopkins Center's faculty lounge.

The Panhellenic Council is the self-governing body of the College's sororities.

Stewart, the first female to receive tenure at Dartmouth, "serves as a role model for her students," said Abigail Roberts '98, who nominated Stewart for the award.

Katrina Steinmetz '00 praised Professor Garrod's commitment to gender issues.

Both professors expressed their thanks for the awards.

Stewart told the audience she was "flattered" and "honored by this" award.

Garrod said "it is lovely" to be recognized for "studying the development of the relationship between men and women at Dartmouth."

The award, created a year ago, honors Dartmouth professors who promote women's issues on campus.

While the council nominated several of the faculty, Garrod and Stewart were the only two to receive awards.

"The award is a way to show our appreciation," Jennifer Blankenship '99, a sister in Delta Delta Delta sorority and co-organizer of the ceremony, told the audience before the awards presentation.

Blankenship then expressed her gratitude to the nominees for their efforts in supporting the advancement of women on campus.

During the ceremony, the council commended English Professor Ivy Schweitzer for earning the award last year and gave each nominee a single tulip.
