New SA VP Gallo is not afraid of burnout; COSO, COS, UGA, La Alianza on his plate

New Bergen, N.J., is home to the semi-famous Coach House Restaurant, the by-hand Bubble Bath Car Wash and newly elected Student Assembly Vice President James Gallo '99.

Despite his origins, Gallo is much more exciting and busy than his hometown. He has his hands full and is currently the president of La Alianza Latina -- the College's Hispanic student organization -- a member of the Committee on Standards and the Committee on Student Organizations, an Undergraduate Advisor, an Office of Residential Life intern and a Green Key member.

And now he is Student Assembly vice president, but he is still not afraid of burnout.

"I am not taking classes this term," Gallo explained in an interview with The Dartmouth. "I was the president of [La Alianza Latina], and that helped me with my time management skills."

Gallo said he hopes to continue the work of previous vice presidents Nahoko Kawakyu '99 and Janelle Ruley '00 but told the Dartmouth on Tuesday that he does not have any immediate strategies for their tasks. He said he only decided to run for vice president a few days ago when the term started.

Gallo said he wants to complete the Visions of Dartmouth project, make the Assembly more characteristic of the entire student body, expand the size of the Assembly, increase communication among Assembly members and obtain more money from the Undergraduate Finance committee for use by the Assembly.

Although he is a psychology major, Gallo plans to pursue a career in commodity trading. He said that his various internships have caused him to learn about trading, and he enjoys it.

After a few years in commodity trading, Gallo hopes to attend graduate school and obtain a Ph.D. in psychology.

"I want to travel all over the world," he said. "I haven't been to Africa or Asia or Australia and want to check them out."

Gallo decided to attend Dartmouth after coming to a perspective student weekend and seeing the campus. He said his favorite part of the school is the people he meets here. Gallo's only disappointment with Dartmouth is its location.

"It's a little isolated from cities and the rest of the world," he said.
