'Why I Love Guns' Failed to Explain Hill's Reason for Killing Animals

To the Editor:

After reading Mark Hill's valentine to firearms ("Why I Love Guns," The Dartmouth, Feb. 11), I would like to know just what kind of "mental connection" he is having with an animal that he is about to kill. He implies that his prey is actively involved rather than just being a target. If Hill hunted by personally wrestling the animals to the ground, I could see some kind of deeper interaction. A good hunter can't let the animal see him so I don't understand how he says they make eye contact -- "Its eyes just stare at mine while a (sic) squeeze the trigger and unleash its death." Since he claims no challenge, thrill or remorse from this avocation, what purpose does killing something serve for him, just for killing's sake?
