College President James Freedman released yesterday the names of the students, faculty and administrators who will sit on the Dean of the College Search Committee, which will be chaired by Dean of the Faculty Edward Berger.
Watt Boone '00 and Cara Mathews '99 will join Student Assembly President Frode Eilertsen '99 as student representatives on the committee which will be charged with finding a replacement for Dean of the College Lee Pelton.
Pelton announced last month he will step down after Commencement to assume the presidency of Willamette University in Salem, Ore.
The administrators on the Committee will be Assistant Provost Sheila Culbert, College Counsel and Director of External Relations Cary Clark and Director of Alumni Relations Nelson Armstrong.
The faculty members will be Religion Professor Susan Ackerman, History Professor Richard Kremer and Anthropology Professor Deborah Nichols.
Berger and Freedman selected Boone and Mathews from the group of six nominees presented to Freedman Monday, Jan. 26 by the Assembly.
The Assembly's Membership and Internal Affairs Committee chose the six student nominees from 40 applicants Jan. 22.
Berger interviewed each of the six nominees over the past two weeks before meeting with Freedman to select the two representatives. Freedman initially said he planned to interview the nominees, but said yesterday he wanted Berger to interview the students since "he'll be the one working with them."
President Freedman selected three administrators and three faculty members to join Berger and the three students on the 10-member panel.
Mathews, who plays on the College's golf team and is president of Delta Delta Delta sorority, said she applied because she thinks the dean of the College "makes the decisions that really affect students."
Boone, a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity, said he "wanted to be a representative voice of the student body and have some sort of lasting effect on Dartmouth's legacy."
Boone said he is excited about the make-up of the group.
"I'm really excited and honored to be a part of the Committee," Boone said. "I'm sure everybody's going to work well together."
