To the Editor:
In response to an act of anti-Semitic vandalism which occurred on Feb. 17, we express our outrage that something of this nature occurred at Dartmouth, a community which values diversity and tolerance. We condemn the individual(s) who perpetrated this bigoted act. At the same time we wish to assert our belief that the Dartmouth community is a welcoming and supportive place for Jewish students. We view this act as an offensive and completely unacceptable expression of bigotry.
However, it is not in any way a reflection of the attitudes of the Dartmouth community. By committing this act of anti-Semitism, this person(s) has proved him/herself to be outside this community. Only a few months ago, Dartmouth demonstrated its commitment to Jewish life with the opening of the beautiful Roth Center for Jewish Life. Just last week, approximately 100 Jewish students from universities throughout the Northeast joined Dartmouth's over 450 Jewish students in a special Shabbat (Sabbath) celebration.
We hope that this act will unite the Dartmouth community in furthering its goal of respect for all people.
