To the Editor:
The frequency with which binge-drinking occurs on our campus disturbs me more than does a stricter College alcohol policy.
While the administration must comply with the law, it is irresponsible student behavior that forces their hand. In my experience at Dartmouth, the administration has never tried to eliminate underage drinking; my room was never randomly searched for alcohol, nor was I ever randomly forced to take a Breathalyzer test.
If students consumed a few drinks in the course of an evening, I doubt the administration would take such an interest in our drinking habits. Or, for that matter, that the drinking age would have ever been raised to 21.
I cannot fault the administration for complying with the law; many of us don't. I cannot fault Safety and Security officers for doing their job helping to keep students safe; we often don't do the same for our own friends. We should start by examining, taking responsibility for and changing our own behavior before we complain that the administration is treating us unfairly.
