'Braveheart' Viewers Reacted Immaturely to Character's Murder

To the Editor:

During last night's showing of the movie "Braveheart," an angry king was shown killing his effeminate and incompetent son's boyfriend in disgust. The audience made it clear with their hooting, hollering and applause that they appreciated this event with the same enthusiasm that accompanied the killing of murderers and rapists at other times during the movie.

I would ask those of you who were there, particularly those who applauded when this minor character was hurled to his death, how little things like this make Dartmouth less tolerant than we would like to think it is. Surely, if a ruthless king were shown killing someone whom he hated for being of a different race or for being a weak and ineffective woman, the audience reaction would have been different.

I am not an activist but this event disturbed me, and I am not comfortable being silent when such bigotry persists despite efforts to make Dartmouth a hospitable environment for all.
