Political Leaders Still Have Profound Impact Over Economics

To the Editor:

I am utterly disgusted by the advice of Kenji Hosokawa '98 in "Welcome, Class of 2001!" [Wednesday, September 24, 1997, The Dartmouth.] Once again he has abused Francis Fukuyama's "End of History" thesis. This time by neglecting the value Fukuyama places on the perpetuation of democracy.

I am now completing a double major in biology and government which has provided me with a great preparation to become a budding capitalist and benefit from the living in a liberal democracy. Despite Hosokawa's claim that economic leaders will be the only ones remembered, our political leaders still have profound influence over economics. For example, Wall Street pauses or panics every time Federal Reserve Board Chairman, an appointed government official utters a word. In addition, members of the class of 2001, don't fret if you are pre-med or pre-law. This great nation's economy will continue to reward both health care providers and the litigators who sue them.
