Wrong Jemison Institute Cited in Camper Story

To the Editor:

Your article in The Dartmouth [Camper drowns in tragic accident; July 9, 1997] contained inaccurate information in the first two and the last paragraphs of your article. Please permit me to provide you and your readers with the correct information concerning this sad incident.

Luis Silvestre de Silva Santos, 15, was attending The Earth We Share (TEWS) International Science Camp. The Earth We Share International Science Camp is not part of the Environmental Studies Program or Dartmouth College or the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries. The Earth We Share Science Camp is implemented by the Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence.

TEWS is being held at Dartmouth this year from June 29 through July 25 and uses the College facilities. TEWS's mission is to address the current and growing need for increasing student literacy in science and technology. The camp was started in 1994 and has been hosted by varied institutions. This is its fourth year.

We thank the entire Dartmouth faculty and staff, as well as the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, the New Hampshire Marine Patrol and the Hanover police, fire and rescue departments, who have been instrumental in providing much-needed assistance in this time of tragic loss.

Our heartfelt sympathy is with the Santos family and his fellow campers. Thank you for printing these corrections.
