Even Moms Have Concerns About DDS and DarTalk

To the Editor:

As a bewildered parent of a non-communicative member of the great Class of 2000, I wish to thank The Dartmouth staff for enlightening me on many issues during the past year. I read with great interest the article and editorial concerning DarTalk.

I admit to laughing out loud when I realized that the guilt I had felt whenever I interrupted my daughter's roommate's conversations was misplaced. Only through my largess did this dear girl have the opportunity to use her calling card and weekly say to me, "I'm on long distance, could you call Katie back ... later?" CLICK...

What a surprise it will be for her next fall in her single dorm room when she finds silence instead of a dial tone coming from her telephone!

This fall my daughter will be charged $700 for food she won't eat. Why not charge her a standard fee to have a private phone line? How about a fee to receive The Dartmouth on-line? ("I never get to my Hinman Box, Mom.")

Please renew my subscription -- I enjoy cutting out articles and mailing them back to Hanover.
