The Dartmuth's guide to Hanover-area dining

It is Green Key Weekend and that means it is time to venture off-campus for some fine dining in Hanover.

5 Olde Nugget Alley

The aptly named 5 Olde Nugget Alley provides a bright, comfortable setting for casual dining amidst antiques, memorabilia and pictures of Hanover and the College. It offers a variety of dishes, including Mexican fare, hamburgers and sandwiches, as well as pasta dishes. Dinners cost around $10 and the lunch menu is also offered from open to close. 643-5081.

Murphy's on the Green

Murphy's on the Green, located at 11 South Main St., offers homemade soups, hot sandwiches, pasta dishes and a wide range of appetizers. Casual dress is appropriate for this restaurant, which boasts a tavern-like social atmosphere and a separate bar and lounge. Prices range from $5.95 for sandwiches to $13.95 for larger entrees. 643-4075.

The Ivy Grill

Located in the Hanover Inn, the Ivy Grill is a perfect place a leisurely meal with small groups of friends or family. Murals with scenes from Dartmouth's past and available seating in booths add to the calm, casual atmosphere. Entrees cost between $7 and $17 and can be charged to students' Dash Discretionary accounts. Neat dress is encouraged. 643-4300.

Cafe Buon Gustaio

Cafe Buon Gustaio at 72 South Main St. is the place to go for fine Italian cuisine, as well as an extensive menu of pasta, seafood and salads. Reservations and neat dress are encouraged for this cozy restaurant. 643-5711.

Lou's Restaurant & Fort Lou's

Only Lou's offers breakfast all day and extensive baked goods, including pastries, cakes and pies. In addition to huge omelets and pancakes, they serve a variety of sandwiches, burgers, homemade soups and daily specials. Located on 30 South Main St., Lou's is usually packed with students and Hanover natives on the weekends, so get there early! Meals cost from $5 to $8. 643-3321.

For round-the-clock dining, Fort Lou's on Heater Road in Lebanon offers the same breakfast and lunch menu as Lou's, as well as a dinner menu and space for large parties. 448-5512.

The Dirt Cowboy Cafe

The aroma of coffee, muffins and pastries baked on the premises add to the quaint ambiance of the Dirt Cowboy Cafe. A popular place for College students on the weekends and at night, the cafe offers various flavored coffees, teas, ice creams, frozen yogurts and an extensive selection of baked goods. Open from 7:30 a.m. to midnight every day. 643-1323.

Old Pete's Tavern

Dark wood benches and tables add to the quaint medieval setting of Old Pete's Tavern at 39 South Main St. in downtown Hanover. You can choose from an array of unique appetizers, soups, stews, dinner specials and hot sandwiches -- or order a favorite combination of deli meats and cheeses to create your own sandwich. Dress is casual and prices range from $5 to $8. 643-2345.

Jesse's Restaurant & Tavern

The warmly-lit interior and wood-paneled walls of Jesse's on Rt. 120 help create a cozy atmosphere for dining. The menu includes seafood and steak dishes, as well as daily specials and an extensive salad bar. Dinners cost about $15, but the Sunset Special menu, offered between 5 and 6 p.m., has five entrees with salad and a baked potato or rice for around $9. Dress is neat but not formal and reservations are highly recommended. 643-4111.

The Daniel Webster Room

For truly elegant dining, students can use their College Dash Discretionary account to pay for a meal in the Hanover Inn's beautiful Daniel Webster Room. Entrees can cost up to $24. Formal dress is recommended and reservations for weekend and evening meals are encouraged. 643-4300.

Panda House

Famed among College students for its excellent Chinese fare, Panda House is located on Lebanon St.. The menu offers a wide variety of seafood, poultry, beef and vegetable dishes, as well as sushi. Prices range from $1.50 to $6.95 for appetizers and from $6.25 to $14.95 for main dishes. Neat dress is appropriate and reservations are encouraged for large parties. Panda House also delivers in Hanover for orders of $10 or more. 643-1290.

The Jewel of India

The Jewel of India on 27 Lebanon St. provides the only Indian cuisine in town and offers a Sunday buffet, as well as vegetarian dishes and free delivery. The menu includes a variety of breads and seafood, chicken, beef and vegetable curries. Prices range from $6.95 to $12.95 for main courses. Casual dress is appropriate. 643-2217.

Foodee's

Foodee's pizzeria offers over 40 different pizza toppings and a variety of specialty pizzas, as well as sandwiches and salads. A small pizza costs $4 while a large costs up to $17. Located on Rt. 10. 643-8852.

Everything But Anchovies

Big Green team memorabilia and the casual, social atmosphere of Everything But Anchovies makes this restaurant a good place for large groups to dine. Offering affordable pizzas, sandwiches and salads, EBAs at 5 Allen St. is also well-known around campus for its prompt, free delivery. Casual dress is appropriate. 643-6135.

C&A's House of Pizza

C&A's House of Pizza is located at 17 Lebanon St. and offers pizzas, pasta and grinders at very affordable prices. A small pizza goes for about $4 and a large is only $7.25. They also offer free delivery in Hanover. 643-2966.
