DDS fate decied, but announcement delayed

The committee charged with determining the future of Dartmouth Dining Services has reached a decision, although it will not be announced until they have had time to meet with the affected employees and administrators.

A few layoffs are expected, although it is not clear how many employees will lose their jobs.

The committee had planned to announce a revised meal plan last Thursday, to be included in students' bills for Summer term, which were to be mailed on Monday. But the group of administrators, DDS officials and students postponed the decision because College Treasurer Lyn Hutton was away.

With Hutton present, they met Monday to determine the level of mandatory spending and which services to cut. An overwhelming 93 percent of the 2,700 students who participated in last week's referendum favored cuts in DDS rather than increased required spending.

Case Dorkey '99, the student intern to DDS and a member of the committee, said the group is proceeding slowly to make sure all parties are satisfied with the outcome.

Dorkey said it is important that the group discuss any decisions with the different constituencies on campus who would be affected, regardless of the scale of change.

Hutton, Associate College Treasurer Win Johnson and Associate Director of DDS Tucker Rossiter will be meeting with employees of the College billing office, the Dash office, DDS and others in charge of the various operations of dining services, Dorkey said.

The committee will meet again on Thursday to plan how to announce the decision, Dorkey said.

In addition to Hutton, Johnson and Rossiter, the committee includes DDS Fiscal Manager Don Blume, Dean's Office Executive Officer Richard Heck, Dean of Student Life Holly Sateia and Collis Center Director Mark Hoffman.

The committee's other student representatives are Assembly President Jon Heavey '97, Vice President Chris Swift '98 and Vice President-elect Nahoko Kawakyu '99, Josh Green '00, the Assembly's communications chair, and Rachel Bogardus '98 and Paul Holzer '00 -- the liaisons to the Trustee Finance Committee.
