Sheryl Crow cancels Feb. 23 concert at Dartmouth

Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow canceled her plans to perform in the College's Leede Arena Feb. 23 so she could attend the Brit Awards in England on the same date.

Crow and the Programming Board had worked out a "definite verbal agreement" that she would perform in Leede, according to Programming Board Member Barrett Shaver '98.

Shaver said the agreement allowed Crow to cancel the engagement up to 30 days before the show. He said she canceled two or three days before the deadline.

Crow would have been willing to perform another date, but the Athletic Department had scheduled basketball practices in Leede Arena for other possible dates, Programming Board co-Chair Matt Ellis '97 said.

Ellis said the canceled performance would have been "a big deal, because we were the only college who" scheduled Crow. Programming Board member John Muckle said the Wallflowers would have performed with Crow on the 23rd.

The Programming Board's agent is trying to book another act, but it is unlikely another performer will be scheduled this term. Ellis said convincing acts to perform at Dartmouth is difficult because there are few venues on campus and few acts tour New England.

Ellis said the Programming Board works with an agent in Boston who finds acts touring the area with available performing dates. The Programming Board then checks for available campus venues on those dates. The Programming Board conducts polls through BlitzMail bulletins to assess student interest before bidding on an act.
