To the Editor:
On Friday evening, I was one of many people who attended a viewing of the film 'DRUNKS'. I wanted to take a moment to comment on two points presented in The Dartmouth's Feb. 24 review of the film.
First, he describes it as a "incredibly depressing" movie. A colleague of mine commented to me that "Yes, it is depressing, but only if that's the first time you ever thought about or were exposed to the effects of alcoholism. What is uplifting is the courage of these people to face their alcoholism and addiction in an effort make their lives better." I could not agree more.
Second, Matt implies that all AA meetings are closed. Both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous have open and closed meetings. Open meetings are just that, open to anyone who chooses to attend with the understanding of and commitment to anonymity. Closed meetings are for people who have a desire to stop drinking or using drugs. Closed meeting also uphold the principle of anonymity.
There is a thriving, dynamic community of recovering people around the world who are committed to helping others recover from alcoholism and addiction. This is evident in the Upper Valley by how Dartmouth students struggling through recovery issues have been welcomed, embraced and supported by members of the local recovery community.
If anyone is interested in AA or NA information and meeting times please feel free to contact me at 650-1414 or over blitz.
