Timeline for Women's Resource Center Relocation Still Uncertain

To the Editor:

We are writing in response to the cover story in Monday's issue of The Dartmouth about the relocation of the Women's Resource Center. ["Women's Resource Center could move by the year 2000," Jan. 28, 1997.] We very much appreciate the Dartmouth's attention to the Center's need for a more visible and expanded space. Articles like this one, along with the support of '99 Class Council and other student groups, help us move along the path toward relocation.

We do feel the need, however, to point out that, despite the headline's seeming certainty, no specific timeline can be identified for the planned relocation of the Center. Indeed, so many variables play into this process that the move could take place anywhere from one to two years from now and some much more distant time in the future. Continued expressions of support for the move are welcome and much appreciated as we continue to seek sooner, rather than later, resolution of this 10-year-old "temporary" problem.

Additionally, while the issue of privacy is and will always be one the WRC takes seriously, the need to protect visitors' privacy need not compel us to eschew greater visibility. For example, while locating the Center in a place like the Collis Center might not be a good option, a free-standing building along a path more trafficked than Choate Road very well might be. We must balance our desire to reach as many members of the community as possible with our respect for some visitors' and groups' desire not to be in the spotlight of public scrutiny.
