Spiros Maliagros '98, a member of Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity was elected president of the Interfraternity Council last night, pledging to lead fraternities to better regulate themselves.
The IFC is the governing body of the College's 14 IFC-affiliated fraternities. Maliagros was president of the IFC Summer term.
David Hawkins '99, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, was elected the new IFC vice president. The vice president serves as a representative on the Coed Fraternity Sorority Judiciary Council, an advisory board which hears cases brought against Greek organizations.
Hawkins, who is in Washington, D.C. this term but returned to Hanover for the elections, said he wants to "show the administration the fraternities can take an active role in self-government."
Former IFC president Mike Armstrong '97 said, "This year the sororities have really come together and unified to strengthen their roles on campus. It is time for the fraternities to do that and work as one, not as 14."
He said he would like to see that no serious sanctions such as social and rush restrictions are placed on houses unnecessarily and "prove the administration wrong that they need to take more control over" the Greek system.
The new IFC programming chair is Dave Lee '98, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Matt Traupman '99 of Sig Ep will serve as the Judiciary Council alternate in addition to serving as vice president this term in Hawkins' absence.
The new IFC rush chair is Dan Epstein '99 of Sig Ep, the new secretary is Adam Mirick '99 of Sigma Nu fraternity and the new treasurer is Gary Jan '98 of Sig Ep.
