To the Editor:
Thank you, thank you, thank you to Abiola Lapite for one of the most down-to-earth opinions I have encountered in relation to the Bear Bones hysteria. ["The Few, The Precious," Jan. 21, 1997].
Finally I have found someone who shares my opinion that strained and artificial awareness efforts such as the proposed Dean of Asian American Students, even while good-intentioned, only serve to accentuate differences between students and cement groups drawn together by common ethnic origin.
I would like to believe that Berenson did not intend to offend Asian American students, and that he is now able to recognize that his strip was not particularly tasteful. However, even as a woman with liberal political views, I certainly believe that satirical comic strips should be taken as such, and not be subject to such sensationalism, especially when they are not particularly clever to begin with. It is important to note that no group on campus seems safe from Berenson's critique.
So perhaps we should all just take a step back and laugh. If not, I just might demand a Dean of Irish Catholic Democratic Women From the Midwest...
