Office of the President Not Heavily Involved in COS

To the Editor:

I am writing to correct a misquote in a The Dartmouth news story regarding the College's annual release of the Committee on Standards report ["COS releases annual violations report," Oct. 4].

Describing the COS decision to increase from three to four terms the average sanction for "typical" violations of student conduct , The Dartmouth reporter quotes me as saying "President Freedman and I just believed that students that are away from the College for a full academic year will have more time for them to regain their confidence and demonstrate the necessary readiness to return." As you might imagine, the Office of the President does not get involved in this level of detail at the COS. I am certain that I said something to the effect that the "student, faculty and administrative members of COS and I believe" that this change made good educational sense.

In all other respects, the article does a good job of reporting a fairly complicated report.
