Big Green sweep UVM: Scopaz '00 shoots in two

The Dartmouth field hockey team moved to 8-6 overall yesterday afternoon with a 3-1 dismantling of the University of Vermont Catamounts.

Freshman phenom Lauren Scopaz again led the Big Green, scoring two goals on the day.

In the first half the two teams remained even battling out to a 0-0 tie going into the locker room.

"The first half it was more anyone's game," Captain Kelly Hannigan '97 said. "But in the second half, we stepped it up and pretty much pounded them."

Pound was exactly what the Big Green did. With 33:08 left in the game, Scopaz took a penalty corner assist from junior Jen Karlen and shot it past UVM goalie Mindy Vinelli.

But the Catamounts were not so quick to give up.

Less than two minutes later, Jodi Withington answered with a goal of her own, tying the game at one.

Scopaz and the Big Green would not let the game slip away though. With 16:44 the freshman leading scorer shot in an unassisted goal to put the Big Green up 2-1.

Scopaz currently ranks third in the Ivy League with 12 goals and 27 total points this season.

Hannigan would add another goal for the Big Green three minutes later, sealing the win for Dartmouth.

With three games remaining, the Big Green realize the importance of staying mentally tough especially since wins during the next two weeks could result in a post season ECAC playoff bid.

But the Dartmouth women want to concentrate on one game at a time, so they will be looking to prepare for Sunday's away game at Cornell.

"Cornell should be a great game," Hannigan said. "Every Ivy League game is big. Hopefully we can pull together and put in another win."

The Big Green will conclude their home season next Wednesday against the alway- tough University of Massachusetts before heading to Harvard next Saturday to take on the Crimson for their last regular season game.
