Big Brother/Big Sister Program Does Not Get the Coverage it Deserves

To the Editor:

Recently the Valley News ran an article which featured the outstanding Dartmouth Community Services organization and highlighted the Big Brother/Big Sister program. Publicity in the Upper Valley not only generates continuing community support for the efforts of both Dartmouth students and local residents but, through greater awareness of Big Brother/Big Sister, it also increases the number of area children who wish to become Little Siblings.

However, because these programs receive little or no coverage from campus publications, students are often ill-informed about the opportunities they have to participate, and there are not enough volunteers to match with children on the lengthy waiting list. The 250 Dartmouth students who already participate in Big Brother/Big Sister know the benefits of their matches, yet so many others are left unaware of the options they have to continue their education outside of the classroom. It is truly unfortunate that in your coverage of campus events, a program as rewarding and educational as Big Brother/Big Sister has been to us is often forgotten.
