Rough week closes out softball season

In a disappointing final week, the Big Green softball team dropped its last six games to Merrimack College, Harvard and Central Connecticut.

The Dartmouth softball team lost 11-2 and 17-2 against Merrimack College, 10-2 and 1-0 against Harvard and 8-5 and 9-5 against Central Connecticut.

With these final losses, the Big Green finishes 6-34 overall for the year and 0-12 in the Ivy League.

After the second game of a doubleheader was rained out last Saturday, Dartmouth closed out its regular season Tuesday with a 1-0 loss to Harvard in the makeup game.

"Harvard was a good way for us to end the season," co-Captain Lauren McQuade '97 said. "Harvard is second in the Ivy League. We showed a lot of heart."

An outfield error in the fifth inning allowed Harvard's only run.

"Overall it was a great team effort," McQuade said. "There were some tremendous defensive plays. Everybody was hitting the ball hard, they just did not get the runs in when we needed to."

In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against Central Connecticut, the Big Green trailed 6-0 until the bottom of the fourth.

Things got interesting then with Julia Doster '97 leading off with a triple. By the end of the inning, after three wild pitches, a walk and several solid Big Green hits, Dartmouth had closed the gap to 6-5.

A two-run homer gave Central Connecticut the 8-5 win.

In the second game, Dartmouth scored an early run in the first inning but was unable to hold its lead. Central Connecticut repeatedly put up hits and finished with a 9-5 victory.

"We let ourselves fall behind in both games," McQuade said. "We were able to rally at a certain point but it was just not soon enough.

Dartmouth dropped the first game of the Harvard doubleheader 10-2.

The lone highlight of the miserable first Harvard game came when Jane Peachy '99 hit her first homer.

The Big Green dropped two other games earlier last week to Merrimack College.

The Big Green's top pitcher, Christina Maybaum '98, took a ball to the head just before the Merrimack games and was unable to pitch.

With Maybaum out of the game, the stress to perform was placed on the Big Green's other two pitchers, Erin Rath '98 and Raili Cook '98, McQuade said.

"Once [Merrimack] started to hit the ball hard, we just did not have the extra depth to give the players a good look," McQuade said.
