Holocaust Should Not be Compared to Skateboarding

To the Editor:

I read Maxwell Knight '99's column ["Skating is More Than Just a Hobby," The Dartmouth, May 20] with a certain amount of amusement until the very end when he made a reference to the Holocaust, something which is becoming a trend at Dartmouth.

It was bad enough when Katie Shutzer '96 compared the slaughter of the Jews to the anorexia problem in the United States, but at least anorexia is a problem worth addressing.

My grandparents were Jews who escaped from Germany at the beginning of World War II. They were lucky. We lost half of our family. People I will never have the chance to meet. People I will never get to know.

It degrades the memories of those who died to compare their suffering to something as trivial as skateboarding.

Knight seems to really enjoy skateboarding, and that's fine with me. But if he really believed skateboarding was so important, then he wouldn't have to defend himself to anyone. Perhaps his vehement defense of his hobby stems from an insecurity that Chris Miller '97's cartoon was accurate.

I get lots of comments from people because I'm a tall, white, skinny, distance runner. People tell me I'm insane. But I'm not about to compare something like the plight of the Jews to distance running.
