At the annual Culley Concerto competition for soloists in three different categories of instruments on Tuesday, Bridget Canniff '96, Katie LaForgia '97 and Emily Zarins '98 garnered first-place awards in the string, woodwind and brass categories, respectively.

Canniff performed on the piccolo, LaForgia won in her trumpet performance and Zarins played the violin. The first-place finishers each received $200.

Second-place finishers were: Clancy Broxton '99 in the string category for the viola, Erik Saunders '99 in the brass category on the trombone and Jessica Schefter '98 in the woodwind category for the flute. They each won a prize of $100.

According to a press release from Max Culpepper, the director of the band and wind ensemble, the Culley Concerto competition is supported by an endowment established by Maryly Culley '86 and her parents Suzanne and Grant Culley. This is the ninth year of the competition.

He added that winners have their photos placed in the Culley showcase in the music department at the Hopkins Center each year.
