Seventh sorority already exists

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the April 25 front page story about the formation of a new sorority at Dartmouth. Both The Dartmouth and the members of Panhellenic Council need to be reminded that this campus already has seven sororities. The exclusion of Delta Sigma Theta from the category "sorority" mimics the habitual and injurious exclusion of black women from the category "woman" in our culture and, oftentimes, on this campus.

Perhaps, in order to distinguish historically white and historically black sororities, we need to specify that this new organization will be the seventh Panhellenic sorority at Dartmouth. Historically black sororities and fraternities are Pan Hellenic, and the historical context for this distinction bears investigation by those who wish to better understand and/or critique Greek life here and nationally.
