Rowers claim 2nd at Biglin Bowl

Dartmouth's lightweight men's crew team traveled to Boston this past weekend to compete in the Biglin Bowl against three other New England teams in a four-way regatta.

The regatta, which looked to be a good measuring stick of Dartmouth's position in the region, was a great success. The showing will serve as another confidence boost for the Big Green, who are now 5-1 on the season.

The Big Green came in second, falling less than two seconds short of beating defending national champion and their Ivy League rival Harvard, rowing the course in 5:54.1.

The course was a 2,000 meter section of the famed Charles River.

Early in the race, Harvard took a quick lead by four seats, but the Big Green rallied to tie the race at the 500-meter mark. The two boats held even for 1,000 meters, until the Crimson was able to outlast the Big Green, pulling away down the stretch in the final 500 meters.

Also competing were MIT, who raced to a 6:06.5 third place finish, and Holy Cross. The Crusaders, competing in the Biglin Bowl for the first time ever finished a disappointing fourth in 6:09.6.

In other lightweight crew races, Dartmouth's freshmen lightweights looked strong, racing to a nine second margin of victory over Harvard to win the Lund Cup in 6:02.3. The second freshman eight and third varsity four also won. The Big Green's second varsity placed second, five seconds behind Harvard.

Up next for the Big Green is a race at home against Rutgers and Ivy League foe Yale next Saturday.
