Lax teams split weekend's games

The Dartmouth Men's Lacrosse team, ranked 19th in the country, survived a fourth quarter surge by the University of Stony Brook to notch a 15-11 victory yesterday.

The men started both the first and the fourth quarter slowly, but each time Stony Brook rallied the Green was able to respond with a rally of their own to secure the win and avoid an upset.

The game started slowly for both teams, but especially for Dartmouth. Neither team was able to come up with a score until Omar Ceballos connected on a pass from Courtney Wilson to put Stony Brook on the board.

Then Derek Reyna scored a quick pair, both assisted by Chris Kollmer, to give Stony Brook a 3-0 lead.

Dartmouth awoke and Tom Scott '96 tallied the Green's first goal 11:31 into the first quarter. Scott Hapgood '97 scored a pair to tie the score at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the game was Dartmouth-owned. The Big Green came out strong scoring seven of the first eight goals of the quarter to take a commanding 10-4 lead. Stony Brook scored twice in the last two minutes to bring the score within four going into the half.

The third quarter was quiet with only one goal scored. Scott connected for his fourth goal of the game in the final minute of the quarter.

Dartmouth entered the fourth quarter hoping to add some insurance goals and put away a victory. Stony Brook, however, had other ideas.

After Hapgood opened up the fourth with his fifth goal of the game to give Dartmouth what looked to be a sufficient six-goal lead.

The Seawolves battled back though, scoring four goals to pull within two goals off the Big Green. Wilson scored two of the four, and the others were scored by Pritesh Patel and Robb Aitchison.

Faced with the threat of an upset, Dartmouth buckled down. George Wisecarver '99, Tim Kennedy '96 and Hapgood scored the next three goals to put away the Seawolves. Stony Brook's Ceballos tallied one more goal to bring the game to it's final score, 15-11.

Offensively the Green was paced by Hapgood who had six goals and eight points and Scott and Kennedy who each tallied five points. The Seawolves were led by Wilson and Reyna who each had five points.

Ned Hazard was strong in goal for Dartmouth with 14 saves over the 60 minutes.

Dan Lozza and Greg Taylor shared the time between the posts for the Seawolves. Lozza tallied nine saves in his 30 minutes in the cage, while Taylor recorded 13 saves for Stony Brook during his time.

Dartmouth outshot Stony Brook 52 to 36.

Dartmouth takes on the University of Pennsylvania at home next Saturday. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
