Golf has upsetting finish at Ivies

The sweet taste of a second place finish at last weekend's Yale Invitational was replaced by the bitter bite of a sixth place debacle at this weekend's Ivy Championship.

The Dartmouth men's golf squad left the Bethpage Black Course in Long Island, N.Y., on Sunday disheartened and utterly confused.

Dartmouth has not finished this far back in the pack in recent history.

However, even in the midst of many Dartmouth-logoed balls taking unintended paths, there were some bright spots.

With his excellent performance 77-80-75, Jay Danzi '98 captured fifth place and All-Ivy honors. Danzi noted that his personal "goal for the year was to make All-Ivy."

Seeing that Danzi has been rebuilding both the physical and mental aspects of his game with Coach Bill Johnson, the performance was especially gratifying.

Also worthy of note was junior Jay Lavender's solid third round of 79 (84-82). And even though his driver gave him troubles, co-Captain MacKenzie Hurd '98 managed a respectable showing of 76-86-80.

Though putting "yips" and tee shot mishaps were in abundance, the second round wind and fatigue made low scoring for any golfer virtually impossible.

"Scoring in those conditions is an art," Lavender said.

Yale blew away the competition with a 20 shot lead over the closest competitor, Princeton. Harvard, Brown and Cornell all managed to sneak in front of the boys in green.

On the whole, the team classified this weekend's play as "disappointing."

"Things like that happen with a young team," Johnson said of the disappointing weekend. "We learned a lot, but learning time is out."

The team can only hope to regain its confidence and pride with a strong conclusion to the year at this week's New England's in Fairfield, Conn.
