To the Editor:
I am a UGA on the first floor of Mid-Fayerweather. Last night at 4:10 a.m., I finished doing a lab write-up for my Geography class. About five minutes later, I brushed my teeth and, walking back to my room, I was struck by how annoying it was looking at the faces of all the candidates for the Assembly. I saw John juggling, Sarah giggling, Unai both laughing and being serious, Steve in the shade, Scott and Joan's names on a pretty poster, Bill's name and Meredith's face. As I was falling asleep, I heard the shuffling of papers, and I got worried because our dorm has been plagued by people ripping down signs about racist incidents and gay friendly stickers. Rather than confront people that I did not know directly, I simply walked out of my room and headed for the bathroom around the corner. I saw that it was three people taking down signs: two were candidates for major positions and one was a guy that I had never seen before. I walked by, went in the bathroom a few seconds, and walked back saying hello to them all and they told me that they were putting their posters in "more prominent places." I heard them go up the stairs and a few minutes later they came down. Once they were gone I again went outside to look at the bulletin board, and all posters except their particular posters were removed from the bulletin board. I walked through the dorm and saw that this was now true on all of the bulletin boards in the dorm. Nowhere was a poster other than theirs to be found.
I confronted the two people immediately with a blitz asking them if they did what I thought, and one of them responded immediately saying that he/she had taken down the posters. I then took it upon myself to remove all posters from the bulletin board in my dorm. Why am I not telling you who did this? Because they are not the only ones. Posters are going up and down every hour in my dorm. I have two bulletin boards, one on each side of the entrance to my room, and their turnover rates have been astronomical.
If the Assembly candidates deny their role in these events, then maybe they should keep their supporters in check. So I give my fair warning to all who attempt to put up posters in Mid-Fayerweather: I am ripping them down unless they are on someone's door. I am sick of watching this political immorality plague our otherwise happy and peaceful dorm.
Why is this happening? I went to the candidate's forum on Tuesday night, and was one of maybe 25 people in the audience because nobody knew about it. There has been no public debate or open forum that people have attended this year, mainly due to poor publicity. Does anyone care about the Assembly at all? This process must be reworked immediately.
