The College's Board of Trustees convened yesterday afternoon at Yale University for its Spring term meetings, and during this weekend's meetings, the Board may choose its new chair.
College News Service Director Roland Adams said the meeting's agenda is confidential but the Trustees will hold general discussions with select administrators of the Yale corporation as well as a few faculty members. The meetings will last through Saturday, Adams said.
College President James Freedman said "it is likely that the Trustees will make an announcement about a new chair of the Board after this next meeting."
In June, another Trustee will replace the current Chair E. John Rosenwald Jr., who has held the position since the summer of 1993 and served on the Board since 1986.
Rosenwald will have completed his second five-year term on the Board as of this year's Commencement.
Adams said Trustees usually serve a maximum of two five-year terms. He said the time a Trustee can serve as chair can vary.
In choosing the new chair, the Trustees deliberate and select the chair from among its members, Freedman said.
Some qualities the Trustees will consider, he said, are "leadership and the capacity to devote time."
Freedman said the College started the practice of holding meetings at venues other than Hanover two years ago.
"The Trustees feel that there is some benefit to be had by occasionally having a meeting outside of Hanover," Adams said, "and in this case it is Yale because there are a lot of similarities between the two institutions and it is also geographically convenient."
"The idea is to get a rounded picture from the various aspects of the institutions," Adams added.
Freedman said the Trustees wanted to go to a comparable institution "to find out how they deal with some of the same questions."
Freedman said the Trustees will talk with Yale officials and have dinner at the president's home today.
In February of 1994, the Trustees met in Washington, D.C., where they held discussions with congressional and government officials. The discussions focused on federal funding and Pell grants.
While in the nation's capital, the Trustees heard from various experts about the present situation facing higher education today, Adams said.
Adams said the Trustees will hold their Summer term meeting in conjunction with Commencement.
