To the Editor:
I would like to comment on Monday's article concerning the men's and women's track team showings at the Heptagonal games. I give the editors of The Dartmouth tremendous credit for the job they do putting the paper together day after day and errors are to be expected. However, the article on the heptagonals was particularly egregious in its mistakes.
First, the track teams will not be traveling to California for Spring trip as is mentioned in the article but to Florida. This mistake however pales in comparison to the fact that you did not even cite the correct winner on the men's side of the competition. Pennsylvania did not sweep the heps as your headline declares -- Princeton won the men's event. Please, if you are going to cover sports, manage to at least name the correct winner of a championship event. Imagine the uproar if your headline this week was "Columbia beats Dartmouth in hoops."
Which brings me to my third bone of contention. Your reporter's article starts out by declaring that most of the campus was interested in basketball this weekend and pretty much ignored the heptagonals. As a member of the track team I find it quite insulting to the hard work my teammates showed this season that you have to start an article on track by mentioning the basketball team, an entity that had absolutely no bearing on the heps other than as a good lead to your story. And as for the contention that few people knew about the heps, the meet was well advertised in every dorm, and Leverone field house was packed both days with the fans of Dartmouth track and field.
