Rush Process Must Change

To the Editor:

I am writing in support of Dani Brune's and Susie Ettingers opinion column on sorority rush. As someone that has gone through the rush process as a rushee and also as the president of a house, it has become crystal clear that something must be done. As a system, we emphasize the empowerment of women and sisterhood. I find it very hypocritical for us to emphasize those ideas and then support a rush process that degrades women by deliberating on and ranking them.

I believe that all women will agree that sorority rush can be improved upon. However, the alternative proposals that have been considered such as guaranteeing bids and increasing the number of parties are only band-aids. We need to address the underlying problems. Do we want a system that encourages superficiality and discourages diversity? I hope that the answer is no.

The random lottery that Dani Brune and Susie Ettinger propose is a step in the right direction. Although it might be rough for the first few years, eventually we would end up with seven strong houses that find their strength in diversity instead of an outdated stereotype. It is time to move forward and do away with the antiquated rush process that we are currently using. As sorority women, we need to come together and decide to make a much-needed change.
