Hypocrisy and Accountability

In the midst of the discussion Monday about the Alpha Chi script I realized one thing about the Dartmouth Community. It seems all these so called "politically correct" people are more hypocritical than the Human Rights Organization in China. They would do anything to promote their agenda, as evidenced by their manure dumping on fraternity lawns. What is worse is that they have the gall to come to a discussion group trying to solve an important problem, and scream about accountability and responsibility. After much ranting and raving, the question remains: where is their own accountability and responsibility?

Imagine the chaos that would have ensued if manure was dumped on the front yard of the African American house or thrown at a window that happened to be flying a Rainbow Alliance flag. There would have been rally after rally, sponsored by the administration of course, as well as a veritable cornucopia of people proclaiming widespread insensitivity at Dartmouth. This is fine. Intolerance clearly hinders a cohesive Dartmouth community. But it is foolish to limit our community to half the population.

Were there any rallies after people dumped manure on the lawns of some fraternities? No. To me this looks like we are treating fraternities and their members as second class citizens. What has the administration done to look into these actions? Cowardice hardly goes far enough to describe the actions of anonymous "manure dumpers." Free action without responsibility condones vigilante groups at Dartmouth! Instead of an open confrontation about their agenda, they pull a childish prank, and then delegitimize their cause further by saying at least "we pissed off the frats." The politically correct activists scream about accountability, but where is their own? And if these people don't come out and claim responsibility, the administration should find them and punish them. If not, the administration sets a dangerous precedent and confirms that political correctness allows action with impunity.

This isn't the only example of pusillanimous pussyfooting by the administration and the avid promoters of political correctness. Does anybody know exactly how the administration got a hold of the script of the Alpha Chi play? Well, it seems as though a motivated woman at the Xerox center took it upon herself not only to read the script but to make an extra copy for herself and pass it along.

Oh, OK, I get it. Every time I think about the duties of a Xerox person I always think of first, read the material you are copying and second, if you should happen to disagree with what the person is Xeroxing, make an extra copy for yourself. This is completely illegal. Copying a personal document is an invasion of privacy. No matter what the person is saying, the ninth amendment guarantees the right to privacy.

I'm sure we all remember the Constitution, a document which appears to lose all strength on this campus. Do we see action being taken against the Xerox worker? Some people may say that the end justifies the means. Ironic that PC-ers now resort to this Machiavellan concept. Look at what the administration says by, first, not firing this vigilante copy person, and, secondly, using the document she copied? Do the ends now justify the means?

I have a good counter example. Suppose I was the copy guy, and I noted that it was a test that my friend would be taking. Would it be wrong to make a copy of a document I am sure other people may want to see? Unquestionably. The administration obviously would not condone this, but it sure SEEMS as long as it is in the politically correct agenda of Dartmouth College and the mob of politically correct students, all action is permissible.

The administration must decide exactly what its policy is going to be. It cannot continue to act hypocritically and expect students to swallow it. I won't. Punishment of intolerance must be universal. People who throw dirt at windows or scrawl words on doors should be treated exactly like those who dump manure. And if this is not the case, then the administration should be ashamed of promoting inequality on this campus.

The politically correct elite at this school should take heed. Political correctness can only go so far before it starts becoming ridiculous. The president of Alpha Chi mentioned that it seemed as if the people who came to the discussion came to lynch him. A woman in the audience proclaimed that he MUST not use that word because of the negative connotations that it contains, which offended her. Give me a break!! If you look up lynch in the dictionary it means a hanging. Nobody is going to tell me to stop using normal words because they don't like it. I mean what is next if this trend continues? When I take my little sister to the zoo, must I not let her see the beavers because their name poses a negative connotation to female genitalia? This trend cannot go on. Sensitivity is important, but not to the point at which it hinders the way people live.
