To the Editor,
In response to John Strayer's article "Even Power Brokers Impotent Over Dearth of Public Debate" [Feb. 2], I would like to comment on some of his statements about me (specifically, my name) and my abilities as a journalist. First, he associates my name with the figure Muhammad of religious fame by sarcastically noting, in his words, "... when somebody named Muhammad is calling down to me from The Beacon, I pay attention. He continues, "My life is hard enough without having to dodge lightning bolts." Now, I am able to take many things in jest but the obvious cynicism in his remarks did not exactly elicit laughter on my part. The connection that Mr. Strayer makes between my name and this notion of prophetic, religious power indicates the sorry extent of his ignorance.
Secondly, he notes in his article that, in researching for the "Power Broker" story, I had blitzed several individuals who purportedly held significant influence within the Dartmouth community. However, he observed that, instead of blitzing the Afro-American Society President, I had blitzed the organization's account. I must admit that, due to haste, my time for research was limited. Therefore, I acknowledge, in that particular instance, the obvious lack of judgement. As a writer, I welcome wholeheartedly all calls and suggestions for improvement.
And yes, even if that means from people who are ignorant.
