The men's volleyball team had its second match of the season this past Saturday at Leede Arena against the Northeastern Huskies, winning 3-1 to rise to 2-0 on the season.
The Big Green got off to a rough start falling behind 10-4 to a Northeastern team that was "intense, very ready to play," according to team co-Captain Jeremy Longinotti '96.
Making an adjustment, Longinotti, who helps coach the team since volleyball is a club sport, brought Rick Fasani '96 in to the setter position. Fasani responded to this call to action with two blocks on Northeastern.
"Rick came in and put two solo blocks on him," said Longinotti. "It started a huge comeback."
The Big Green went on to beat Northeastern 15-12 in the first game.
In the second game, Dartmouth capitalized on its boosted morale, steamrolling over the Huskies by a score of 15-5.
In the third game, with a solid 2-0 lead Dartmouth turned to its bench, which put in a solid performance losing that game by a score of 15 13.
"We've got really incredible depth on this team," Longinotti said. "The bench is getting more consistent every day."
The starters returned to beat a fatigued opponent 15-3 in a one sided final game.
Matt Streng '98 came up big for the Big Green with a team-leading 22 kills. Mark Shuster '99 added on 15, and Longinotti had 13.
Colin Gorman '97 had seven blocks, leading the team. Shannon Beckering '97 had four and Fasani had three, including the two huge blocks in game one.
The team goes on the road this weekend for two games on Saturday at St. Anselm's against Bates and St. Anselm's. The Big Green will then travel to Cambridge to take on Harvard Sunday. The games Saturday mark the beginning of league play for the team, while Sunday marks the continuation of a rivalry with the Crimson.
The team returns home Feb. 8, to play Tufts at Leede Arena at 7:30 p.m.
