P.E. Requirement Important

To the Editor:

I am upset by Sam Bonderoff's opinion piece whining about the Physical Education requirement ["Surviving the Phys Ed Requirement," Jan. 9]. P.E. has long been a part of a Dartmouth education, and should remain so. P.E. provides a break from academic life, and adds vitality to our campus.

Bonderoff sneers at the traditional concept of the "Perfect Dartmouth Man" and his "sound mind, sound body." Does he seriously suggest that physical activity and a healthy lifestyle should be things of the past? I hope not. Decades of research have made it clear that physical activity improves one's overall well-being. For many students, exercise is relaxing and enjoyable. I am sorry that Bonderoff sees Dartmouth's paltry requirement of three P.E. classes as such a burden.

In fact, Dartmouth does not ask that much for P.E. For those who are not athletically inclined there are classes such as Tai Chi, CPR, and First Aid. Surely Bonderoff can find something outside of his intellectual world that will not overly challenge his physical abilities.

The sarcastic tone with which the swimming requirement is discussed is particularly disturbing. The requirement aims to minimize the chance that a Dartmouth graduate should ever drown. Swimming can be a life or death matter. Bonderoff's belief that Dartmouth has a swimming requirement just in case "you ever fall into the Connecticut River" mocks a policy that has undoubtedly saved lives.

As a wave of anti-athleticism sweeps the nation and our school, Bonderoff's opinion piece is another sign of growing intolerance towards healthful and wholesome physical activity. His snide remarks and reference to the "Mack Daddy Jock Beast" are offensive to those who value physical fitness and athletics. Instead of ridiculing what challenges him, perhaps Bonderoff should get out there and give P.E. another try, leaving his can't-do attitude at home.
