How Should We React?

To the Editor:

Like many people, I am appalled at the recent hate crimes that have been committed on this campus. They evoked strong, emotional reactions in me and most of the people I know. Recently I got a flyer under my door, that I then placed on my door, stating that we as a community did not react to any of the crimes committed on campus. I thought it was a wonderful flyer and a large step in the right direction to building a more harmonious student community. But when I started to think about it more, the flyer has one glaring omission. An answer to the question of how we are to react? Are the authors of the flyer looking for more than an emotional response? Building a stronger community is more preemptroy than reactionary, and besides that, it takes time and hardly constitutes an immediate community-wide reaction. When students at the College heard about the crimes, I think most of them reacted strongly. Perhaps I am just ignorant as to how to react to a hate crime, but if the authors of the flyer want more from the community, they need to be more specific. There are many people at Dartmouth willing to help in any way to build a more understanding, stronger community, and if the authors of the flyers have a way of doing this, we would love to help. We just need to know what answers you propose.
