Audience at 'Hell Night' video was the juvenile ones

To the Editor:

I was one of the crowd who attended the "Hell Night" Video Showing in the Topliff basement on Wednesday (Oct. 18, 1995) night.

Despite the obvious row of red baseball caps toward the front who presumably came to defend their "cause," as Michael Goody '98 would call it, I would like to believe that the majority of the attendees came not to push their own barrow, but to see what the commotion surrounding the "Hell Night" tapes was all about.

As The Dartmouth reported Thursday, ("'Hell Night' video interrupted," Oct. 19, 1995) Professor Luxon called an abrupt end to the showing after several members of the audience refused to apologize for their interjections, which Luxon found offensive.

Many of the audience would agree that the interjections were rude, however we were not surprised. Not surprised because we largely expect and tolerate that kind of behavior.

Perhaps it is not Luxon who is juvenile for "storming" out of the room, but the few members of the audience who couldn't form a basic apology -- a basic social skill.

Then again, perhaps we, the audience, who seem to expect and condone rudeness to an invited guest from our peers are the juvenile ones.

It would be a great pity if the film and tape Luxon intended to show us was not viewed and discussed by the Dartmouth community. The student body should re-organize the event soon. This time let's have an independent chairman and an open-minded, mature audience.
