Soccer struggles on the road

The women's soccer team had a disappointing weekend after barely passing by Pennsylvania 2-1 Saturday and then ending in a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon to St. John's.

The Big Green, now 4-1-1, came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Penn in their first Ivy League game of the season. After defeating Penn 8-0 last season at home The Big Green was not expecting for the Quakers to pose so many difficulties.

"We tend to look at how the team was the year before," Jenna Kurowski '97 said. "The first half we were so casual. They had all the pressure on us, but we just seemed real laid back."

The Dartmouth offense was just a little off as the Big Green failed to score until Betsy Dobbin '98 took a cross from Cindy Goodwin '97 and nailed in a goal past Penn goalkeeper Amy Urbin.

After seven minutes with the game tied at one, Melissa McBean '97 dished off a pass to Kurowski who eluded two Quakers and took a shot. Although the shot was deflected, Kurowski caught the rebound and shot in the winning goal with 7:14 remaining.

"I think we are having problems on both ends," Kurowski said. "We're not finishing so we're just not scoring enough goals, and we are letting teams that we shouldn't let score score."

Finishing proved again to be a problem for the Big Green on Sunday when Dartmouth took on St. John's.

The Big Green totally dominated the game, outshooting the Red Storm 15-5, but could only come out with a tie.

After a scoreless first half, Dartmouth took the initial lead three minutes into the second half when Kurowski took a pass from Christina Hallenbeck '97 and nailed in her fifth goal of the season.

Minutes later, the Red Storm would respond to tie the game and send it into overtime.

In the overtime periods, the Big Green had two shots hit the post, but were unable to come out with a goal.

"Our goal is to win the Ivy Championship, but if we play like that, we aren't going to do it," Kurowski said. "I think we did learn our lesson though. We can't take teams lightly."
