While most students enjoyed Green Key weekend, the Dartmouth men's and women's track teams ran for Eastern college prominence at George Mason University.
The women's team finished sixth in the ECAC Championships, its best ever finish, while the men's team place eight in the IC4A championships.
The women used strong, consistent performances to compile their 41 points. The sixth place finish was seven places higher than last year and fulfilled Coach Sandra Ford-Centonze's prophecy after last year's meet: "Hopefully, we'll do even better next year."
Maribel Sanchez '96 and Amy Winchester '96 led the Big Green charge. Sanchez won the 5,000-meters in 16:24.32 and led teammates Jenna Rogers '98, and Emily Hodgson '98 in to second and fifth places respectively. Rogers finished 12 seconds behind Sanchez.
Winchester spread her efforts over two events, finishing fourth in both the shot put and the discus. Winchester threw 48'4" in the shot put, and 147'1" in the discus. At last year's championships Winchester finished second and fifth in the same events.
Dartmouth's strength in the distance events spilled over to the 10,000-meters and the 3,000-meters. Deidre Milligan '98 finished fourth in the 10,000 with Kristin Pierce in 12th. Milligan's finished in a time of 35:36.48.
In the 3,000-meters Kristin Manwaring '95 brought home fifth with a time of 9:41.89
The men's eighth place finish equalled last year's performance.Weight thrower Adam Nelson '97 turned in the biggest efforts of the meet.
Nelson defended his title in the shot put, with a winning toss of59'3", a foot further than last year's winning effort. Nelson, also, placed third in the discus. His toss of 164'11" was two and a half feet longer than the fourth place effort of Alex Ghanotakis '97.
On the track Dartmouth scored in all the distance events. In the 5,000 meters Sam Wilbur '94 finished second, just breaking the 14-minute barrier in a blazing personal best of 13:59.58.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Aaron Bouplon '95 placed third in 8:52.69 with Jack Dwyer '96 in ninth.
Kai Richter '95 and Ted FitzPatrick '95 finished sixth and ninth in the 10,000 meters.
Tim Farrell '96, Brian Barry '96, Jim Tuxbury '97 and Will Uppington '96 placed sixth in the 4 x 800 relay.
