To the Editor:
In response to The Dartmouth's article, "Hanover High students: More than just baggy pants and skateboards," (May 18, 1995) the reporter stereotyped the students of Hanover High with the idea that [they] are "invading Dartmouth territory."
The title of the article was supposed to define how Hanover High is "More than baggy jeans and skateboards," but the idea was not clearly illustrated when reading the first paragraph. Furthermore, I felt that I was misquoted in response to questions about the social scene at HHS. The generalization that Hanover High students are "immature" bothers many of us. The students of Hanover High have done a lot to help the community through Youth In Action and many other volunteer activities.
The irony of the article is how the students at Hanover High were in some ways portrayed as "hicks." But what many Dartmouth students don't realize is that there are many students whose parents teach at the College, work at the medical school, and are lawyers, doctors or engineers in highly respected career fields. Perhaps the reporter should have researched the prestigious college destinations of many of our present seniors. In the near future, if The Dartmouth returns to Hanover High, I hope that they will give a more diverse and clear representation of the student population.
