Student Assembly campaign 'scandals' offer a pessimistic view of leadership

To the Editor:

From the very beginning of my Dartmouth experience one important fact has been clear to me: Dartmouth College prepares us to be leaders. Having such responsibility before us,I feel that we should work hard to be honest and fair. Ethics should certainly guide us in whatever we do. Only that way can we do better than many of our corrupt political leaders.

And yet when I read about how the Student Assembly campaign has been marred by scandals, I have to wonder. I have to wonder whether we are really going to be any different from politicians and the usual dirty politics they practice. I have to wonder whether we should really try to be ethical at all.

Perhaps we should have no ethics. Yes! Let's have no morals. Let's campaign early and break as many rules as we want. Let's cheat, forge, and use any kind of dirty tricks that might be deemed necessary. Thanks a lot to everyone who has made me correct my definition of a "leader."I am now sure of what kind of leader I should be after graduation.
