Softball sweeps Colby-Sawyer doubleheader

The Dartmouth softball team swept Colby-Sawyer 8-0 and 13-2 in a twin bill yesterday at Sachem Field, almost doubling the team's total victories for the season and giving it momentum headed into an important Ivy League homestand this weekend.

Dartmouth hit extremely well in the third inning of the first game, scoring six runs.

Co-Captain Jennifer Pitts '95 hit a homerun, driving Amy Coelho '97 home and edging the score to 3-0. Lauren McQuade '97 followed with a double, then came two singles from Julia Doster '97 and Raili Cook '98.

Karen Hersey '96 hit a triple and drove Susan Warhover '95 and Cook home. By the end of the third inning, the Big Green led 8-0. Christina Maybaum '98 pitched another excellent game to stifle any hopes Colby-Sawyer had of a rally.

Ericka Lee '95 pitched the second game. Pitts, Rachel Rochat '95 and Doster all had hits again, giving Dartmouth the lead. Elise Leroux '95 hit a homerun in the second inning.

"We knew we had a chance with these games," Rochat said. "We played a great offensive game and hit really well. If we continue to be aggressive at the plate, we might have a chance of beating Penn and Cornell."

The Dartmouth team is gearing up for two big Ivy League games this weekend, versus the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell.

Penn is currently ranked fifth in the League, while Cornell is ranked seventh. The Big Green holds their own at sixth place, with a record of 5-23 overall, 1-4 in the Ivies.

The team looks to improve its record this weekend, especially after last weekend's tough loss to first-ranked Princeton. The Tigers are undefeated in the League and on a 21-game winning streak.

"We are psyched to play this weekend," said Rochat , who plays first base. "Penn and Cornell are not as competitive as Princeton, and the games should be exciting. We really want to hit and go after the pitches, instead of just taking them like we did last weekend."

"Cornell and Penn have fairly new programs as well," Pitts said. "We are looking forward to playing the two teams."

Both Saturday and Sunday's games start at noon at Sachem field.
