Diners' response to Shrews performance was 'morally unacceptable'

To the Editor:

The usual monotony of my Full Fare shift was interrupted this evening by a pleasant surprise visit from the women's theatrical group, the Untamed Shrews. The Shrews first got everyone's attention with a rather loud whistle, and then proceeded to discuss, I assume, certain aspects of sexual abuse in their usual creative theatrical format.

I use the word "assume" because though I was standing no more than 30-feet from the furthest performer, I heard only a fraction of what The Shrews said; several diners found it impossible to make it through the entire 60-second performance without haggling, laughing at or simply ignoring the women.

I will not delve into feminist theory to state why men have the privilege to engage in this sort of irresponsible and rude behavior, but I will state why I found this such a disheartening incident: sexual abuse is not an opinionated issue. Though people may choose whether they accept feminist philosophy, people must accept that sexual abuse occurs, and it must be discussed and dealt with. Sexual abuse is something for which everyone, especially we men, is responsible.

For these individuals to behave in such a way regarding the theme of sexual abuse is morally unacceptable. Not only was this behavior offensive to the Untamed Shrews and others who may have wanted to listen, but it allows certain individuals to refuse to listen to such serious issues, and encourage similar incidents.

Again, sexual abuse is not an opinionated issue: it is a fact that it occurs, and we cannot afford to let people like the aforementioned diners shout it down.
