Two juniors enter Assembly VP race

Juniors Kelii Opulauoho and Bill Tovell confirmed yesterday they will run for Student Assembly vice president next term.

Opulauoho and Tovell join Aleph Henestrosa '96 in the race for Assembly vice president.

Opulauoho said he will run with Assembly presidential candidate Phil Ferrera '96 and a slate of "around 21" candidates for general Assembly seats. Opulauoho said he decided to run with Ferrera because the two share many ideas. Opulauoho said the candidates for the slate have already been selected.

Both Ferrera and Opulauoho said they are concerned with gender issues and issues of diversity on campus.

Opulauoho, who is vice president of Sigma Nu fraternity and an Area Coordinator in the River Cluster, said his "grassroots" connections make him aware of student issues and needs.

Opulauoho said issues of community will be high on his agenda if elected. "Diversity does exist at Dartmouth. It does," he said. "There is a way to take advantage of the community on campus."

Opulauoho said he and Ferrera chose candidates to run on their slate for general Assembly membership because the people represent a diverse group of students, not because all the candidates had identical agendas.

"We know we can cooperate and be effective," Opulauoho said.

Tovell said one of his primary goals as vice president would be to find out what issues students want to see addressed by the Assembly.

"I feel that the Student Assembly needs to be more responsive to Dartmouth students' needs," he said.

Tovell, who is currently acting president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and treasurer of the Coed Fraternity and Sorority Council, said he does not have a personal agenda.

"I think it is difficult to do that because things change and because what issues are important now may not be important next fall," he said.

But Tovell said he would like to cut fruitless Assemblyproducts like the course guide and increase communication between students and the administration.

Tovell, who has never served on the Assembly, said he will not have a running-mate for the elections.

"I think it is very important that I run on my own," he said. "I'd rather people just evaluate me."
