To the Editor:
I am writing to commend The Dartmouth for having produced what I consider to be a challenging and inspiring series of articles ("Women at Dartmouth") on the issues facing the women and men of Dartmouth and on our history at this college. Naturally I am also pleased to see the paper endorse the Task Force on Women and Coeducation at Dartmouth. The proposal for this Task Force, which the Provost has approved, was developed by a large group of hard-working individuals -- women and men, students, faculty and staff -- committed to enabling the institution to look backward and forward productively as we approach the 25th anniversary of coeducation.
When I arrived on campus in September the conversations that made the proposal possible were well underway. We have already made good progress and are looking forward to working together to see the assessment and celebration come to fruition. This Task Force belongs to Dartmouth, not to any one individual or group of individuals. That is its real strength. I encourage everyone who is interested in participating in this process to contact my office. There will be more than enough work to go around.
