Women's hoops wins with clutch free-throws

Betsy Gilmore '94 drained two free throws with seven seconds remaining to give the women's basketball team a 62-60 victory on the road at Siena monday night.

With a minute and a half to play and Dartmouth leading 59-56, Kira Lawrence '96 fouled Jenn Najdek.

Najdek could not convert in the clutch, missing the front end of a one-and one. But Siena snagged the rebound and a converted quick layup, to cut Dartmouth's lead to a point with a little more than a minute to play.

Half a minute later the Saints had the ball again after Brandi Jones '95 was called for an offensive foul.

Kim Colunio continued the Saints's charge, hitting a layup to give Siena the lead with 45 seconds to play.

On the Big Green's next possesion, Ilsa Webeck '94 was fouled and went to the charity stripe for a pair of free throws. She hit the first and missed the second, but this time it was Siena that failed to box out; and Dartmouth grabbed the board and called timeout.

Gilmore was fouled by Michele Heffern as she tried to sink the game-winner. She stepped to the line for the first time of the night and calmly sank both shots, providing the margin of victory. "I was pretty confident," Gilmore said, "it wasn't like I had come off the bench."

Webeck led the Big Green with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

Gilmore said the team was pleased with its defense. "We knew they were scoring about 50 points a half," Gilmore said. The team had to play good defense since "we sure don't score 50 points a half."

The Big Green return to action with a pair of home games this Friday and Saturday against Ivy League rivals Cornell and Columbia. Both games are at 6:00 p.m. in Leede Arena.
