With only a day to rest from a long weekend road trip the Dartmouth women's basketball team suited up again last night to play Boston University. Despite an exciting second half the women were unable to clinch the win losing 55-47.
"We knew BU was a tough team because they recently beat Harvard and Brown," co-Captain Betsey Gilmore '94 said. "We also knew they were going to run on us and we just didn't have the legs to keep up."
The loss dropped the Big Green to 4-7, and bettered Boston's record to 7-2.
The team got off to a slow start, scoring only 18 points and making only 25 percent of their field goals in the first half. Boston clearly dominated the first 20 minutes of play with senior Julie Schmidt scoring 10 points.
"At halftime, coach kept saying we were still in the game and not to give up, we were only down by 10," said freshman forward Bess Tortolani, who scored six points off the bench.
"We felt good about the game and encouraged those that played to keep on giving their best."
Obviously, the best was yet to come.
Dartmouth came back after the break with their intensity level raised several notches. Much of the scoring came in the second half, with co-Captain Ilsa Webeck '94 finishing out the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Sophomore stand-out Sally Annis netted her usual 12 points.
Gilmore made Dartmouth history midway through the second half, when she succeeded in breaking the Big Green's record for steals with a total of 298 in her career.
Rebounding was a bright spot for the Big Green last night, as the team dominated Boston on the glass all night, outrebounding them 50-33.
This Saturday Dartmouth hosts a doubleheader against Harvard, with the men's team playing at 2:00 p.m. and the women at 4:00 p.m.
