Housing proposal discriminates against Greeks

To the Editor:

With regard to yesterday's house editorial ("Empty beds must be filled," Jan. 19) on the merits of ORL's new housing requirements for the CFS, I would like to express my disappointment and surprise at the position taken.

It appears that many are readily willing to encroach upon the privately owned property of fraternities under the guise of community. While it is a concern of all students that there is a shortage of housing on campus during the Fall term, discriminating against and punishing members of fraternities is not an approach that encourages community involvement. These proposals act only to further alienate fraternities.

In fact, the plan outlines little that is not already part of the CFS Constitution and Minimum Standards. The essence of the plan is punitive and the crux is new punishments. This is not an attitude that will engender a desire in fraternities to help the administration to find solutions to the problem.

I believe that most fraternities are willing to address the housing problem and appreciate their position in the Dartmouth community; however it seems that membership in the Dartmouth community has continually dwindling benefits and growing costs.
