Hockey splits pair of weekend road games

The women's hockey team split games on the road this weekend, beating Cornell 9-0 but losing to St. Lawrence 3-2.

Dartmouth 9, Cornell 0

Saturday's game matched the Big Green against the Cornell Big Red. The Big Green took control of the game from the start.

Left-wing Phoebe Manchester '96 fed the puck to right-wing Malaika Little '97, who scored, 10-and-a-half minutes into the game.

While this was the only goal of the period, it set a precedent, which Dartmouth repeated throughout the game.

Dartmouth outshot Cornell 13-3 in the second period, scoring on three of those attempts.

Eight minutes into the second period, Little and Manchester reversed their roles with Manchester scoring and Little assisting. Four minutes later, Manchester fed defenseman Amy Coelho '97 who scored, bringing the Dartmouth lead to 3-0.

Just one minute after the second goal of the period came the third from left-wing Michelle Erickson '96 with assists by center Sarah Hood '98 and right-wing Emilie Schnitman '98.

Dartmouth kept up the pace throughout the third period. Two minutes into the period, Manchester notched her second goal of the day with assists by both Coelho and center Jessica Clark '98.

And the scoring barrage continued. The line of senior Captain and left-wing Rachel Rochat, right-wing Sarah Devens '96 and center Sarah Howald '96 took over. Of the remaining four goals, Howald scored three and Rochat scored one with three assists by Rochat, two by Devens and one by Howald.

Overall, Dartmouth outshot Cornell 31-11. "We would score and then would want to get another one," Dartmouth Coach George Crowe said.

"They were hungry for goals for the first time," Assistant Coach Judy Parish said. "It was the culmination of everything they had been working on all week."

"We were finally working as a unit instead of individuals. It was a good team effort," Devens said.

St. Lawrence 3, Dartmouth 2

Sunday's game did not go as well as Saturday's for Dartmouth. "It went from the worst period we have ever played to the best period we have ever played," Parish said.

The first period was uneventful, ending without score. But St. Lawrence returned for the second ready to play, taking the Big Green by surprise with a quick goal just 30 seconds after the onset by center Carrie Champagne.

Dartmouth had an opportunity to get even during a man-down situation, but despite taking 10 shots during the period, they could not get the puck into the net.

Champagne scored her second goal 11 minutes into the period, followed by a goal from center Julie Barnett five minutes later to give St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead.

Parish said the team "just flattened out" in the second period.

"We tried something new, and it didn't work, and St. Lawrence scored off of it. We lost all confidence," Crowe said.

Dartmouth returned to the ice in the third period with a mission: to take control of this game. And it did.

Seven minutes into the period Rochat scored. She was followed by defenseman Michelyne Pinard '98, who scored with three minutes left in the game.

But despite taking nine other shots, Dartmouth could not get the puck into the goal and the game ended in a 3-2 victory for St. Lawrence.

"They really worked hard to come back in the third period," Parish said. "It was just a matter of running out of time."

"It was one of the best comebacks I've ever seen," Crowe said.

Goalie Sarah Tueting '98 had a great game in goal, saving an average of nine goals each period.

This weekend's games move Dartmouth's record to 7-5-2 overall, 3-1-0 in the Ivy League.

On Wednesday, Dartmouth will battle Bowdoin in Thompson Arena at 2:00 p.m.
