Brown beats men's squash 6-3

The members of the men's squash team thought this was the year they would beat the Brown Bears.

But the Bears had different ideas, as they roared into Hanover yesterday afternoon and left with a 6-3 victory.

"We were hoping to win. We've been kind of shooting for Brown, we've been getting closer and closer to beating them every year," Jon Gabel '98 said.

"I think the team played okay. It was a tough loss because we thought going in to the match that we had a good chance to win. It was a little bit dissappointing to lose," Scott Hammond '96 said.

Gabel continued his outstanding season, winning in the number three slot.

Other winners for the Big Green were Hammond in the number two position and Russel Echlov '97 in the four slow.

Hammond won a tough four-game match, 15-12, 13-15, 17-15, 15-6.

He said the first three games were hard-fought, but his opponent tired first.

"It was a pretty close match, I was just in better shape than my opponent," Hammond said.

Teamate John-Keith Wasson '96 said Gabel, Hammand and Echlov all played good matches, and their performances exemplify where he hopes the team is heading in the future.

The team returns to action this Saturday when they travel to Amherst. The match will begin a six game road stretch; the team plays next at home on Feb. 11 when Franklin & Marshall comes to town.

Wasson said the team will continue to work on having a winning attitude and he expects them to meld into a strong team by the season's end.
